“Sheikh Yousef highlights that the current port redevelop- ment initiative includes expansion works at Shuwaikh Port, Shuaiba Port, and Doha Port, as well as the establishment of a new land port in Shuaiba. The Kuwait Ports Authority is mainly focusing on addressing the issues that make it difficult for economic activity to increase in the ports. As the KPA’s General Director explains it, expansion generally means the ability to accommodate larger vessels, which require bigger berths, and a larger number of cranes available per ship. To illustrate the issue, in 2015 the Port of Shuwaikh became congested due to a number of factors including the breakdown of gantry cranes due to damaged cable reels.The breakdown of the cranes caused berthing delays of about five days at the port.”
